on the web: of a kind

Of A Kind is a fashion website that features limited edition products and stories from the emerging fashion designers behind the products.  The site’s tagline is “Know and Own” – which is exactly what the site sets out to do.  It presents interviews with up and coming talent about the artists’ process and products, and then offers a limited quantity of each product for sale over the site (think Gilt).  I love the idea behind this site, because I love supporting local emerging talent.  For example, when I go shopping in my neighborhood, I always prefer the small independent boutique stores.  This is the same thinking.  Although this talent isn’t exactly local, it’s emerging, which is great!  It’s also a great way to spot new talent and score some pieces before everyone else jumps on the bandwagon.

Check out an interview with the women behind the site about why they started the site and wanted to make online shopping a more personal experience.

lines i love: mara hoffman, the queen of prints

Even if you have not heard her name, you have probably seen her work.  Mara Hoffman is a fashion designer based out of New York who produces some of the best prints around.  Each season, she reinterprets her work in a new and fresh way.   Inspired by travels and by nature, Hoffman mixes geometric shapes with tribal elements and vibrant colors to create some really fresh designs.  I have always been a fan of her maxi dresses, but this season I am totally loving her swimwear!  Not only does her swimwear line incorporate some awesome prints and beading, but she really mixes up the shapes as well.  I cannot wait to sport one of these at the pool in a few months!  Check our some of her fashions at Les Pommettes, Sirene, and Bona Drag.

Trending: Jazz up your Camera

The Tokyo Dreamer camera strap

We recently purchased a new camera which has been awesome!  However, of course, with a camera comes the batteries, bag, lenses, etc.  Those accessories are boring but necessary I guess.  I’m thinking a great way to personalize my camera would be to spice it up with a fashionable camera strap!  Sarah Francis Kuhn has an eponymous collection which includes some really chic and functional stapes or if you prefer a simple classic leather strap check out Wood and Faulk.  The one I have added to my wish list however is the Tokyo Dreamer camera strap from Photojojo.  It comes in three colors and is clean and simple with  just the right amount of pop.

Trending: Men’s Inspired Smoking Slippers

Charles Philip Flats from Bergdorf's

I love women’s fashion inspired by classically tailored menswear pieces.  That’s why last fall, I was so thrilled to see designers translating the classic men’s smoking slipper (a la Hugh Hefner meets Annie Hall) into women’s lines.  The slipper can be both luxurious and leisurely but always classic!  In the fall and winter we saw a lot of velvet styles, but now to accommodate warmer weather, we are seeing more leather and soft suede.  I picked up a pair in black and white pony hair by Belle by Sigerson Morrison last Fall, but right now I am loving this tangerine pair by DV by Dolce Vita – how perfect for summer!

Welcome to the world of online shopping

Yesterday brought some exciting and long awaited news concerning one of my favorite brands…. Club Monaco finally entered the world of online shopping!  Club Monaco falls somewhere along the lines of J. Crew / Madewell, but in my opinion it tends to incorporate more on trend shapes into their clothing.  As I generally prefer online shopping, this was very welcome news.  Until recently, Club Monaco and Zara were both holding out against offering online shopping, which was very irritating.  However, Zara finally jumped on the bandwagon last year and now Club Monaco is doing the same!  To make it even better, Club Monaco is collaborating with a few other brands to offer some of their items on the website, including Rachel Comey shoes, which I think need a new home in my closet .

It’s that time of the year (baby time)…

So for the expecting mothers, I came across the absolute cutest maternity line that I have to share.  We all know that maternity clothes have traditionally been quite frumpy and not the most fashion forward.  Well, this line from Hatch has the cutest drapey stream lined pieces for maternity wear.  The spring/summer line is adorable! I would totally wear this stuff non-preggers.

Another great line for those expecting is Belabumbum.  Check them out!

Hunger Games Fashion Tumblr

So, yes, I am totally on the Hunger Games bandwagon.  I held out until last December and then proceeded to rip through the books in all of about three weeks (which, for a slow reader, was intense!).  This is probably my first foray into the YA genre, but let me just say that while I was reading the books, they totally consumed me.  I am definitely looking forward to the movie in a few weeks. I have high expectations and hope that they keep it dramatic but not cheesy. I think there is so much opportunity for the directors to really create a whole new world, especially with the (hopefully) over the top, costumes!  Since the whole world seems to be caught up in the Hunger Games paranoia, I am not surprised that there is a Hunger Games fashion tumblr called Capitol Couture.  So far it looks like Rodarte, Dior, McQueen and a whole slew of other designers have contributed to bringing this series alive on the big screen.  If that doesn’t get you excited, it looks like the soundtrack will feature Kid Cudi and Arcade Fire! Let’s hope this movie doesn’t disappoint!

Trending: Nail Art

Now I’m a pretty low maintenance gal when it comes to nail care.  Splurging for a monthly mani / pedi or buying a few Chanel or RGB polishes is about as extravagant as I’ll get, and while I generally steer clear of over the top fashion trends, I did spy one that I am excited to try!  It’s called the Double Reverse French (see pics below).  I love the black tip featured in the second pic and am also thinking it would look great in a navy or dark green!
