Art or not?

So I recently watched the film “Exit Through the Gift Shop.”  Great film.  Before watching it, the only thing I knew about street art and graffiti was the artist Banksy, the enigmatic and arguably most popular graffiti artist in the world, and how he used satire to voice his political and social commentary.  The film offers a great glimpse into the world of graffiti art and the commercialization of certain artists.  It follows the development of Thierry Guetta into Mr. Brainwash, a self-anointed protege of Banksy himself and features some of the only footage of Banksy ever captured on film.  More interestingly, it highlights the arbitrariness with which culture judges and monetizes certain “talent” and how once something is declared a piece of art, mainstream culture jumps on the bandwagon whether there be any intrinsic value to the piece or not.  I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is interested in art or learning more about the subculture of graffiti.

Spring Branches

Tulip and Magnolia Branches from Terrain

How can anyone just not love this time of year?  OK – maybe if you have allergies – but still!  In DC, it has been absolutely beautiful.  The weather has been so warm and the cherry blossoms are out.  Although the winter was not harsh, you can still feel everything waking up.  I have been trying to bring some of that freshness into my apartment.  One of my favorite spring floral arrangements is so simple.   All you need is some seasonal branches and a clear vase.  This also gives me the opportunity to mention one of my favorite home and garden stores – Terrain.  Although a little pricey, I love this store.  They carry some really gorgeous products and are always creating unique and simple arrangements.  I love using their site for inspiration, which is how I created the seasonal branch arrangement that is now sitting on my dining table (see the photo below)!

It’s that time of the year (baby time)…

So for the expecting mothers, I came across the absolute cutest maternity line that I have to share.  We all know that maternity clothes have traditionally been quite frumpy and not the most fashion forward.  Well, this line from Hatch has the cutest drapey stream lined pieces for maternity wear.  The spring/summer line is adorable! I would totally wear this stuff non-preggers.

Another great line for those expecting is Belabumbum.  Check them out!

Hello world!

Welcome to my new WordPress blog!  I have started this blog to really be a collection of things I like or may find interesting and want to share with others.  I anticipate that the scope will be quite broad – because I like a lot of things! Of course, I welcome all comments and criticisms.  I consider this somewhat of an adventure and look forward to sharing it with you.

Warm Weather Salads

A salad could very well classify as my favorite meal.  They work for me anytime of the year – winter, summer, rainy, sunny.  Now that the weather is getting warmer though, I thought it would be fun to post some links with tips to spice up your salads.
The Metrocurean, a great guide for any DC foodie, posted some suggestions on how to mix up the typical salad.  TheKitchn, from which I get some of my favorite recipes, and an affiliate of Apartment Therapy (love!), recently posted some creative alternatives to the typical salad with greens.

Hunger Games Fashion Tumblr

So, yes, I am totally on the Hunger Games bandwagon.  I held out until last December and then proceeded to rip through the books in all of about three weeks (which, for a slow reader, was intense!).  This is probably my first foray into the YA genre, but let me just say that while I was reading the books, they totally consumed me.  I am definitely looking forward to the movie in a few weeks. I have high expectations and hope that they keep it dramatic but not cheesy. I think there is so much opportunity for the directors to really create a whole new world, especially with the (hopefully) over the top, costumes!  Since the whole world seems to be caught up in the Hunger Games paranoia, I am not surprised that there is a Hunger Games fashion tumblr called Capitol Couture.  So far it looks like Rodarte, Dior, McQueen and a whole slew of other designers have contributed to bringing this series alive on the big screen.  If that doesn’t get you excited, it looks like the soundtrack will feature Kid Cudi and Arcade Fire! Let’s hope this movie doesn’t disappoint!

House Beautiful DC Scavenger Hunt

As a long time DCer, one of the biggest downfalls (in my humble opinion) of this city has been its reluctance to develop its own style and personality.  Fortunately, I think there has been a subtle shift in the landscape so to speak.  It seems like people are gradually embracing both design and fashion and are developing the city’s personality.  That being said, I always welcome design events that try to reach out to a broad demographic.  Tomorrow, House Beautiful is organizing one such event. To promote their Color It Green guide, they are organizing a scavenger hunt throughout DC with awesome green chairs from a variety of different designers as prizes!  My favorite so far is the classic Loll Adirondak.  Definitely if you are in the DC area tomorrow, check out the scavenger hunt and hopefully you can score some new chairs!

Diet Detox

Last fall I went on an awesome trip to the Pacific Northwest.  I spent time in California and drove up the coast to Portland.  I really enjoyed everything that part of the country had to offer – great weather, drive through coffee shops, gorgeous vistas, and of course lots and lots of red wine, beer and great food!  When I got back home and eventually returned to reality, I decided it was time I try a detox of sorts.  So I signed up for a two week detox offered by my local yoga studio.  Although not technically qualifying for it, it seemed pretty close to a vegan diet.  By about day three, I realized it would be a lot more difficult than I originally thought, and I even considered myself a very healthy eater beforehand.  However, by the end of week two, despite cheating a few times, I felt great!  Since then I have taken some of the lessons I learned during the detox and have tried to incorporate them into my daily eating habits.  For example, I try not to eat red meat more than once a week; my diet is primarily made up of vegetables, raw when possible; I never drink sodas; and I try to seriously limit my intake of processed foods and hydrogenated fats.  One resource that really helps me do this is nutritionist Kimberly Snyder’s blog and her frequent email tips. Every time I read her emails, I learn something surprising.  For example, I always thought agave syrup was a good substitute for honey and other sweeteners, however, it turns out that it is a highly processed sweetener which has been converted into almost pure fructose!  Who knew?! Even if you are not ready to commit to a full fledged plant based diet (which I am not), it’s easy to start incorporating some of her helpful advice into your daily habits.

Eames Documentary

So, anyone who knows me knows that the one “thing” that I have wanted the most and will someday own is the Eames Lounge Chair by Herman Miller (second is the Saarinen Tulip Table in marble – yes, I am saving my pennies!).  I know that some people think it’s ridiculous to spend that amount of money on a chair, but let me tell you, it is not just a chair.  It is a work of art.  It is perfectly crafted to fit the human form, and it is gorgeous to boot!  Anyway, I recently watched a great documentary about the genius duo of Ray and Charles Eames called Eames: The Architect and the Painter, and I would highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in design, art or history.  These two were pioneers that forever changed the landscape of modern American design.  Check out the trailer here.

Trending: Nail Art

Now I’m a pretty low maintenance gal when it comes to nail care.  Splurging for a monthly mani / pedi or buying a few Chanel or RGB polishes is about as extravagant as I’ll get, and while I generally steer clear of over the top fashion trends, I did spy one that I am excited to try!  It’s called the Double Reverse French (see pics below).  I love the black tip featured in the second pic and am also thinking it would look great in a navy or dark green!
